Do you know your Primal Self?

Your Primal Self is that wild, earthy, natural part of you that is not bound up in expectations, judgements, or ideas of who society thinks you should be. Your Primal Self simply is who she is, in all her untamed glory. She is liberated in her body, her sexuality and her creative expression.  She is in sync with nature and thus seems unpredictable like the weather, but in truth she is guided by a current that is much deeper than the eye can see.  She is rich in range because nature demands it.  She is alive and pulsing with life.

Over centuries, the untamed wildness of our Primal Self has been reigned in, she’s been controlled and kept under wraps.

I always enjoyed connecting with her in secret pockets of my life, like when I was out for a hike, dancing, or creating art by myself.

I didn’t realize how important she was until I had a few big dreams that I was struggling to manifest. That was when I realized:

The key to embodying the dreams of your Higher Self is dependent on your connection with your Primal Self.

In my experience, creative visions, dreams and inspiration come through our Higher Self. Inspired ideas feel so good because they are laced with a higher frequency of energy from higher realms of consciousness.  The good feeling of an inspired idea leads us to want to create it and make it real in this reality.

This is where the Primal Self comes in. Your Primal Self has dominion over your body and your earthly experience.  She is connected with the earth, and thus anything that is going to manifest in your earthly reality is going to go through her. Your Primal Self rules the vessel by which your dreams will birth into reality.

Once I realized to power of my Primal Self I knew I could no longer keep her in secret pockets of my life, she needed to be included in every aspect of my life!

 

Over time and many manifested dreams later, I have cultivated a number of simple practices that I use to strengthen my relationship with my Primal Self.

5 Simple Steps to Connect with your Primal Self

1. Listen to your natural impulse

Do you know what time you naturally want to go to bed, wake up, eat, or work?  Do you listen to this natural impulse, or are you terrified if you listen you’ll become a blob doing nothing?! To connect with your Primal Self, the simple practice of noticing your natural impulse is a great place to start forming a connection. You don’t have to act on it right away, because some trust may need to be established, but simply noticing and listening to your natural impulse builds a bridge for your Primal Self to breathe.

2. Connect with Nature

Spending time in nature will connect you with your Primal Self without much effort at all. Simply looking at trees, birds, rocks and and water will refresh your memory in a way that is, well, primal. How could you connect with nature today?

3. Body Time

Our Primal Self is rooted in the body, she likes to feel, and experience life through earthly sensations.  Carving out some special time to feel your body, to touch, to dance, to move, to shake, to take care of your self will deepen your connection with your Primal Self. How can you connect with your body today?

4. Try something new

Have you ever noticed when you’re traveling in a different country everything feels more alive.  When you’re exposed to new things you are more present in your experience. When you’re more present in your experience your Primal Self is invigorated.  What is something new you could try today?

5. Build trust

Your Primal Self is trustworthy, despite our society’s subconscious sabotage towards her. To build a trust-based relationship with your Primal Self you may have to prove to yourself that she is trust-worthy. A great way to prove this to yourself is to make a list of all the ways your body and natural instinct have guided you in your life. Think of all the times your body gave you a gut reaction about something, or you just felt a certain way only to discover you were exactly right! Make a list of all the ways your Primal Self has always been on your side helping you.
